What is your name?

Cheryl Butler

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I had an idea for a story about three years ago and it kept niggling at me so my husband suggested I write a book. I thought I might manage around five chapters, but a year later, I had two books written!

What genre books do you write?

This is difficult! My first novel is classified as ‘Erotica’, but I don’t see it as that, I see it more as adult fiction…with very strong language and themes!

What is the name of your book/books?

My first novel is A Proclivity To Prurience.

Were there alternate endings you considered?

Yes! I vacillated between two possible endings and it wasn’t until I was around one or two chapters from the end that a third option presented itself, and that’s the one I chose.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Do it! But be prepared for a hard slog – the writing part is easy, it’s trying to get your book to stand out and be noticed once its published that’s the difficult part.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Absolutely. I was unsure, given the nature of my novel, how they would react, but they have all read it and do all they can to promote it…even my dad, although I have forbidden him to read it!

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

I don’t find it difficult at all – I actually find writing women more difficult! But you would need to ask the men if I’ve done them justice!

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Energizes, definitely, even when I’m writing late at night, which is often the case.

What items do you surround yourself with when you write?

Several drinks, my phone and the radio.

What is your favourite genre of books to read?

Psychological thrillers – I love to experience somebody else’s crazy!

What is your favorite childhood book?

The Animals Of Farthing Wood – I loved animals and was gripped by their struggles and their human personas.

Do you have a favourite author or one who inspires you to write?

No, not really – I’m inspired by the need to write! I have met a fabulous group of authors through Twitter who are extremely supportive, and seeing the trials they have also faced and the work they have produced is a huge boost if ever it feels like a struggle.

What words of wisdom would you give to someone who wants to be an author?

Patience and self-belief. It will take a while before you get noticed and not everyone will like your story, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth telling.
