What is your name?

Jacqui (JL) Park

When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I've always enjoyed writing, ever since I learnt to spell. I realised I wanted to do it more when getting a few compliments from teachers, or being called on as a child. Life got in the way, but I've finally come back to it.

What genre books do you write?

Generally, Dystopian or Speculative Fiction, though dabbling in Urban Fantasy as well.

What is the name of your book/books?

Black Phoenix Rising: The Alexis Chronicles Book Two

Were there alternate endings you considered?

Not really - it's not over yet, so the ending hasn't quite been written!

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Firstly - write for you, no one else, but don't hide it either. Let people in, they will actually enjoy what it is you've written (Found this out much later in life)

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes, as long as I'm still working in my other job until I make enough to live on.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Trying not to put overtly feminine thoughts in their heads when they're a rough, rugged guy. Though, I don't usually attribute genders to emotional or physical attributes - as my writing features LGBT.

Does writing energise or exhaust you?

Energise, which is an issue given I write at night!

What items do you surround yourself with when you write?

Pepsi Max, Laptop, Music (headphones), and currently - articles for my Master's paper... which I procrastinate over all the time - writing fiction is so much easier!

What is your favourite genre of books to read?

Urban Fantasy, Dystopian.

What is your favourite childhood book?

The Wishing Chair (and the two others) by Enid Blyton,

Do you have a favourite author or one who inspires you to write?

Kim Harrison.

What words of wisdom would you give to someone who wants to be an author?

Just write. Finish that novel, and then worry about what comes afterwards...worrying about what comes later while writing will stifle you, and bring on Imposter Syndrome - you can do this.
