Rosemarie Cawkwell Q & A

Updated: Mar 28, 2019

What is your name?

Rosemarie Cawkwell

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about ten, I’d already started collecting books and writing short stories by then. They were ‘Swallows and Amazons’ crossed with ‘The Famous Five’.

What genre books do you write?

Fantasy, currently. There will soon be crime novels too.

What is the name of your book/books?

‘Hidden Fire’ and ‘Fire Betrayed’

Where there alternate endings you considered?

No, the first two books were plotted out from the start. Originally, they were one book but I had to separate and trim.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

To 16-year-old me: Don’t listen to all the people saying it’s impractical, go for it now!

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Social pressures are different, so trying to work out how a person would react to a situation.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Energize, unless it’s a particularly emotional scene or something close to my heart, in which case it exhausts me.

What items do you surround yourself with when you write?

Notebooks, mug of tea and a jug of juice.

What is your favourite genre of books to read?

Difficult to say, crime and fantasy mostly though.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Swallows and Amazons, by Arthur Ransome.

Do you have a favourite author or one who inspires you to write?

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are a never-ending source of entertainment and he was a wonderful human being. GNU STP.

What words of wisdom would you give to someone who wants to be an author?

Just get on with it.
