What is your name?
Sonnet O’Dell
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I think it was something I wanted to do at a very young age but was told story writer was not “a proper answer” to – What do you want to be when you grow up? I didn’t decide that maybe I could actually be a writer until I was in my late teens, early twenties.
What genre books do you write?
I tend to stay around the paranormal, paranormal-romance branch of literature though I have tried my hand at both Sci-Fi and Young Adult.
What is the name of your book/books?
I have several series. My longest one is the Cassandra Farbanks Series (currently up to 9 titles) is almost in its tenth year. I’m working on couple trilogies – Cera Raine (vol #1 & #2 available) and the Clockwatcher Series (vol #1 available). Blessed by Blood starts off my Mistral Cove series but I haven’t yet decided on how many books it will span. My latest release though is a collection of paranormal romance shorts for adults called Paranormal Pleasures.
Were there alternate endings you considered?
Every ending has been written and re written and thrown out and recovered and changed several times until it feels right.
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Maybe to start self-publishing a little earlier, to not have been so scared to try doing things a different way.
Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes. Both of my parents are pretty proud of what I have achieved and often tell complete strangers all about it ☺
What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
Getting into their heads. Making sure that they aren’t all the same or a stereotypical view of the opposite sex.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
I usually start energized with an idea, that urge that makes you just write, till suddenly you look up and several hours have passed and exhaustion sweeps in.
What items do you surround yourself with when you write?
I like to be comfortable when I write. I still often use pen and paper to write, because staring at a computer screen for too long can give me a headache and it makes for poor writing. However I keep my phone handy in case I need to check something. Siri has answered some rather weird questions at the oddest hours.
What is your favourite genre of books to read?
I like crime, paranormal, young adult and sometimes sci-fi books. I don’t really like straight up romance titles but don’t mind books that have it as a sub element.
What is your favorite childhood book?
The Kingdom Under the Sea and other stories by Joan Aiken. I still have a copy on my bookshelf now. I was also quite fond of Alice in Wonderland.
Do you have a favourite author or one who inspires you to write?
I like a lot of writers who when they have a new book out I buy it straight away. However, I couldn’t decide out of them which would be the number one – not without holding some sort of winner takes all death match lol.
What words of wisdom would you give to someone who wants to be an author?
Never think it’s going to be easy. It’s true that everyone has a book inside them but getting it out is pain, elation, hard work, disappointment, success, failure & determination. You will be tested. You’re resolve will falter. Keep on going because in the end, it’s worth all of it.
