Stefan Angelina McElvain Q & A

Updated: Mar 28, 2019

What is your name?

Stefan Angelina McElvain. It is a nom-de-plume.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Only recently. My first eBook was published four years ago after I retired. Before that story, I’d only written reports, emails, and old-fashioned snail mail. The story got into my head, and the only way I could rid of it was to write it down. It basically wrote itself!

What genre books do you write?

Paranormal science fiction, with a good helping of erotica—and combinations of the above.

What is the name of your book/books?

I have a number of novella series…Origins (4), Invasion (3), Vampires. These all follow the same hermaphrodite lead character Alex. Then we have Cosmetologist Extraordinhair (3) and the Chronicles series (2). In addition, there are a few shorts, Twelve Nights, Frosty the Snow Woman, and a Walk in Your Shoes.

Where there alternate endings you considered?

Not really. The story and the characters take over…if they don’t, I struggle and suffer with writer’s block—the conflict between my outline and what the characters really want to do!

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Never say never.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Not really.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Getting inside their skin.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

If you mean, do I sleep? No, I don’t as the story keeps twirling around inside my head. But I am addicted to the sensation of the story taking over. Editing can be a chore. I usually write quickly, set aside, and start something new. This means I have plenty of choices to edit. Eventually, I pluck up courage to submit them for publication.

What items do you surround yourself with when you write?

I sit in my office and type on my computer. I use Scrivener to create, compile into Word and then edit in Word.

What is your favourite genre of books to read?

Science Fiction.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Narnia series by C. S. Lewis.

Do you have a favourite author or one who inspires you to write?

Isaac Asimov. With the advent of the internet, there are now a flurry of new authors. It’s difficult to keep up. Viola Grace inspires me, she specializes in shorter stories and has over three hundred published…amazing.

What words of wisdom would you give to someone who wants to be an author?

Being a writer is a calling, accept it. Readers are a bonus, and making money is a double bonus.
